Location
Villa 629 is located just a 12 minute stroll from Havelock North Village.
Hawke´s Bay is one of the hottest and sunniest areas of New Zealand. Long hot summers and cool winters are typical of a temperate climate that provides ideal growing conditions for grapes. The region is recognised on the world stage for award winning wines, particularly for the quality of its red wines.
Hawke´s Bay has produced wine since the arrival of the first European settlers in the 1850´s. By the 1920´s Mission Estate, Te Mata Estate, Vidal Estate, McDonalds Winery and Glenvale Winery (now Esk Valley Winery) were all established in the region.
There are many ways of experiencing the vintages of Hawke´s Bay Wine Country. You can self drive with a Hawke´s Bay Wine Guide, take a wine tour hosted by a local operator either by coach, limousine, bicycle or horse and cart. Grape growing is not confined to one area of Hawke´s Bay and each specific area or sub region offers a different variety and flavour. In fact Hawke´s Bay has an ability to produce exceptional wines across a broad spectrum of styles. This includes the early ripening varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc to the later Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
As you visit some of the 70 or so wineries scattered throughout the region you will see wine making at its best. Many of these wineries have an open door policy and like to show their wine making prowess, their impressive wine cellars and gold medal winning labels.
A wine tour of Hawke´s Bay takes in wineries from the coastal areas influenced by the Pacific Ocean, alluvial plains, river valleys and hillsides of Hawke´s Bay. Each winery has its own characteristics, which is reflected in the wines.
The local wine scene is celebrated year round with individual winery events culminating with three major events – Harvest Hawke´s Bay, in February, the Hawke´s Bay Wine Auction in June and the Hawke´s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards in October.
